Can SPF insulation be used in ditch breaks?

How can SPF insulation protect pipelines?
Many pipeline construction projects require ditch breaks in their construction layout. Ditch breaks help contain soil erosion and sediment buildup. For years ditch breaks were built solely out of heavy rocks. Transporting rocks to the pipeline construction was both time- and labor-intensive. Alternative solutions started to include other material, such as straw bales, sandbags, and silt fencing.
The drawback of using sandbags is only a slight difference in transportation weight. Straw begins to rot and weaken over time, creating less than ideal permanent solutions. Silt fencing can be unwieldy and bulky since it’s transported in rolls. Enter SPF (Spray Polyurethane Foam) insulation, the newest solution to ditch break pipeline construction.
Due to its liquid state, the expansive nature of SPF allows for a more cohesive barrier in pipeline construction. The drums used to transport SPF are large, but far easier to transport than rock or sandbags. The quick-set SPF compound allows for fast application. SPF is also versatile enough to be sprayed as “pillows” under pipeline construction and between potential dangers, like heavy rocks, to protect the pipeline during ground settling.
