How Closed-Cell SPF Roofing Reduces Energy Costs

Spray Polyurethane Foam roofing, or SPF as it’s commonly called, is quickly cornering the market on commercial cool roofing solutions, especially when it comes to energy savings.
As the name implies, SPF roofing is created through closed-cell foam sprayed directly onto commercial roofs, creating an air- and elements-tight membrane across any roof surface, ductwork, or substrate. Even though SPF roofing is lightweight, it is extremely durable. A 1995 study done by the National Roofing Foundation (NRF) at Arizona State University revealed that SPF cool roofing can last up to 50 years of exposure with routine maintenance. (Source)
The unique strength and bonding density of SPF roofing is one of, if not the most energy-efficient cool roofing solutions available today. Unlike many Built-up Roofs (BUR) or single-ply commercial roofing solutions, SPF’s molecular makeup is capable of sealing off even the smallest gaps and cracks in a roof’s structure. This airtight umbrella of protection insulates the building’s interior from energy loss while also protecting against weather and exterior temperature variances.
Our R&A Contracting team is a proud installer of Lapolla Industries‘ FOAM-LOK SPF cool roofing application. What makes FOAM-LOK unique is the Thermo-Flex 100% acrylic elastomeric coating that’s applied over the SPF foundation. Our application team installs up to an inch and a half of FOAM-LOK for primary waterproofing and insulation purposes before applying two coats of Thermo-Flex. The Thermo-Flex acts as a second blanket of protection and naturally deflects UV radiation.
The U.S. Green Energy Building Council reports that Lapolla Thermo-Flex roofing systems have been certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council with SRI numbers of over 90. This is only one of multiple LEED credits available to commercial building consumers installing SPF cool roofing solutions.
Our goal at R&A Contracting is to provide you the best commercial roofing solution available for both your building style and your energy budget. Installing a lesser-quality roof might mean more revenue for us in the future, but that’s not the R&A way of serving our customers. This is why we promote such high-quality cool roofing solutions like SPF, because your energy savings is one of our greatest investments.
