SPF Roofing and Texas A&M – Part 3: Energy Savings of SPF roofing

Texas A&M University helped put SPF roofs on the map in the 1980s.
With 27 campus buildings covering over seven million square feet of BURs (built-up roofs) made of gravel and tar, Aggieland was in desperate need for a better roofing solution. Texas A&M installed SPF roofs on all 27 buildings between 1980 to 1984 and the results were incredible.
Gerald Scott, the then-head of roofing and energy conservation of the Texas A&M Physical Plant Department, discovered that the university recovered the entire cost of the SPF roof installations through energy savings alone in an average of 4.5 years! (Source) The SPF roofs installed on the Texas A&M campus buildings are now thirty years old and are still saving the university in energy costs each year. If the SPF roofs paid for themselves within the first five years, think how much the university has saved in the additional twenty-five years!
SPF roofs carry the industry’s highest R-value (over 6.0) by using elastomeric coatings to reflect the sun’s heat index. Our R&A Contracting team proudly installs FOAM-LOK from Lapolla Industries and we couldn’t be happier with the results. By adding Lapolla’s Thermo-Flex protective coating on top of FOAM-LOK, it gives SPF roofs a virtually limitless life-cycle. Many of our clients enjoy saving up to 40% off their energy bill because of the extremely efficient design of SPF roofing insulation.
