What you need to know about R-Value and commercial roofing

Did you know that the R-Value of a commercial roofing solution is dependent on how correctly it’s applied?
Commercial roofing insulation is designed to be installed in contact with air barriers on all six sides. If there are gaps or voids in the insulation, the R-Value is functioning at only a fraction of its R-Value rating. Spray Polyurethane Foam changes the R-Value function, which makes all the difference. (Not sure what R-Value is? Here’s a great explanation of R-Value.)
Closed-cell Spray Polyurethane Foam acts as both insulation and air barrier by nature of its chemical compound. When SPF is sprayed into place, the foam immediately begins its expansion process. The closed-cell spray foam seals off air transfer and eliminates any need for additional air barriers.
Spray foam can help reduce the convection heat transfer load of any commercial building, a benefit that isn’t calculated into R-Value ratings. Building attics can often exceed 120°F during the summer months, which places a significant heat load on HVAC. Spray Polyurethane Foam’s insulating element and air barrier function reduces heat transfer, effectively lowering your attic’s vented temperature to around 80-90°F, even on the hottest summer day.
If you want to know the difference between other commercial roofing solutions and SPF, visit an attic with an SPF-covered interior radiant surface. You will be amazed at the difference. The conduction properties of SPF are well-documented in its industry-leading R-Value and K-Factor ratings. What isn’t so easily captured is the secret sauce of SPF: the air barrier and insulation working as one to reduce convection impact and radiant temperature.
You probably have questions about SPF, such as:
- How much does SPF roofing cost?
- Is my building the right fit for SPF roofing?
- What’s the installation process and timeline for installing an SPF roof?
