What makes up SPF insulation?

SPF is a great roofing solution, but what’s it made of?

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is a compound mixture of isocyanate and polyol. When SPF is installed, the isocyanate and polyol are simultaneously dispersed through a heat-inducing proportion dispenser that sends the two components into the spray applicator. When the SPF compound is released, the two components mix together, adhere to its new surface, and begin the expansion process.

The SPF expansion process

It takes only a few seconds for the foam to dry and just a few minutes before you can walk on it. The liquid compound expands up to thirty times its liquid density and hardens into a solid, continuous layer. This monolithic energy-efficient covering is both seamless and incredibly stable. Because of its liquid state during application, SPF can be installed onto any roofing substrate, including stone and steel. The liquid compound fills even the slightest cracks and seams, which makes it very resistant to weather elements and moisture. The adhesive bonding of SPF creates a dual benefit: a weatherproof roof covering and a seamless strengthening of the existing roofing structure.

How SPF insulation reduces energy costs

An SPF roofing solution has a virtually unlimited life-cycle, but there’s a catch. After properly installing an SPF roofing solution, it’s highly recommended that you also install a layer of elastomeric coating or gravel over the SPF surface. This layer provides added protection against harmful UV rays and other weather-related conditions known to damage roofing surfaces. SPF roofing solutions carry the highest R-Value of any commercial roofing solution known today. The thicker the density of the SPF, the higher the R-Value. Many SPF roofs have density measurements ranging from 2.5-3.0 lb./cu. ft. An SPF roof with a 3.0 lb./cu. ft. density has a compressed strength of approx. 50 p.s.i. and an R-Value of 7.14 installed and 6.86 aged (results may vary slightly). These numbers are phenomenal when compared to other commercial roofing solutions. A Texas A&M study revealed that an SPF roof is capable of paying for its costs by way of energy savings in four and a half years of service. (Source)

Jim Lowry - Bissinger's Handcrafted Chocolatier

Eric and crew were really nice to have around. They were courteous, careful and caused little if any disruption. Their work looks good too! To be honest… a good experience with a product that I initially had misgivings about. I’m a convert because of Bubba, Sam and Eric. Thank you.

“I want to thank the crew at R&A for a job well done on our very leaky roof at the shop. It is certainly nice to have the drips and rivers gone from the shop when it is raining. I also wanted you to know how much we appreciated that the guys were able to stay out of our way and allowed us to do business as usual without any problems or interruptions. The roof looks great and the clean-up after the job made it so we couldn’t even tell you’d been here. Thanks for doing what you do so well!”

Jay Moore, President of Safe Way Tire and Auto Center

“My wife and I were on vacation when water pipes burst in our house. We got a hold of Craig and the R&A crew was able to start evacuating the water immediately. The best part was that they were able to start work before we even returned home. It was a very fast turnaround considering the extensive amount of water damage.”

Will from Dardenne Prairie, MO

Lindell from Greater Missouri Builders (GMB)

“We purchased a house and there was some damage to the roof. Very impressed with the thoroughness of Mike’s inspection. Very comfortable with their explanation of what needed to be fixed. Most impressive was the way they protected our landscaping. Really liked the way they treated me as a valued customer, even though it was only a small project.”

Ross from Troy, MO
